And earlier this week, the First Lady made an appearance on NBC’s Today Show outfitted in a $34.95 dress from none other than H&M! Never shying away from bold colors, Mrs. Obama gave her navy-and-white print a personal touch by adding an orange obi-style belt and pairing it with bright yellow pumps. And while she has an affinity for arm-baring styles, her stylist took a different approach with this ruffle-front dress, customizing it by adding sleeves. The synonyms of the word frugal are thrifty, prudent, economical, sparing, careful, penny-wise, parsimonious and penny-pinching. The most negative connotations of the word frugal conjure up images in one’s mind of stingy people, or people who are commonly referred to as being miserly or misers.

For many people, when they think of the rich, think of flashy cars, gargantuan homes, and lots of bling. They don’t think about the rich being frugal, but many wealthy people are among the most frugal folks around. When Sam Walton was the richest man in the world, he drove an old pickup truck. Warren Buffet is one of the richest men in the world and he still lives in the same house he bought for $31,000 in 1958.

In The Millionaire Next Door, Thomas J. Stanley details how the wealthy practice frugal habits, such as living below their means and ignoring conspicuous consumption.
